Summary of the project

Four investors: Total operator (31.2%) a subsidiary of Unocal, now Chevron (28.3%), PTT-EP (Petroleum Authority of Thailand- Exploration & Production: 25.5%) and  MOGE (Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise: 15%)
Gas production unit offshore, 346 km sub sea pipeline, 63 km onshore pipeline through the Tenasserim district to the Thai border.
Thirty years of estimated reserves.
87% of gas production sold to Thailand for supplying gas power plants in the Bangkok area.
In the onshore section, socio-economic program started early 95 for neighbouring villages population

Impact of Total's presence

Job opportunities: 2,500 persons employed during construction phase, 800 for operating phase (Total + subcontractors), 95% nationals, 11 million USD spent for training.
Transfer of technology and management techniques to MOGE and local subcontractors.
Accompanying socio-economic program.
Local mineral resources produced with care to environment, income generation for the country.
Long-lasting economic link forged with Thailand.
Presence of a western witness in the country, with its own Code of Ethics.

The socio-economic program

Launched in early 1995 in the pipe area, to create a climate of trust and to foster sustainable local development.
Designed in close cooperation with villagers (Elected Village Communication Committees).
14.02 million USD spent since 95, 1.77 million spent in 2007.
2/3 spent in the pipe area, 1/3 in other places.

Actions in the pipe zone (25 villages: 35,000 inhabitants – overall population benefiting from SE Services: 50,000)
Dedicated team: 10 doctors, 4 Communication Officers, 4 veterinaries, 3 agronomists.
Achievements:
- Free health care and vaccination: Infant mortality divided by 4.5, mortality linked to local diseases divided by 3 to 20.
- Education: school attendance has doubled (8,800 children at school in 2007).
- Economic development: animal husbandry (pig, chicken, cattle), rice, perennial crops (cashew nuts, palm oil, rubber), development of fishing.
- Infrastructure: permanent roads, bridges (37), hospital (1), local clinics (8), schools (44).
- Main achievement: peace and eradication of forced labour.

Other actions
Support given to six orphanages in the Yangon area (over 1,300 children).
Support to nationwide program against blindness, managed by Helen Keller International Foundation.
Action against AIDS in Mandalay with WHO, Union and under the auspices of Prof. Gallo.
